The ability to spot a bargain. Some have it, some don't. It's a certainly a handy skill, and one that Kevin has displayed with great consistency over the years.
This year Waking Warrior (£7,000, pictured below) and Shoshoni Wind (£15,000) have advertised that talent to great effect in the Hambleton colours but Choose Wisely perhaps takes the biscuit.
The son of Choisir, perfectly named given he was bought for just £5,000 at this year's sales, took a while to find his feet this year but after winning his maiden at Carlisle on his third start he hasn't looked back, finsihing fifth in a strong Listed race at Maisons-Laffitte before heading to Glorious Goodwood for his first Group race in the Molecomb Stakes.
The improving two-year-old, ran an absolute cracker in the Group 3 race, travelling as well as anything before sticking on well to be beaten just a neck and a head into third, an effort that earned him a Racing Post Rating of 101 - not bad for a horse bought such a small amount.
Choose Wisely, owned by popular ex-trainer David Barker, holds an entry in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York's Ebor meeting and is a shining advert of Kevin's ability to buy shrewdly.
We'll be utilising that expertise later this month when Kevin and the team head to Doncaster for the DBS Premier Yearling Sales aiming to find the next Waking Warrior or Shoshoni Wind, who is pictured below getting a warm reception from her owners after winning her maiden.
