Hambleton’s record with our older horse recruits bears the closest inspection, highlighting how selectively purchased horses and targeted training can deliver value to owners and syndicates.
20 years ago, Hambleton’s first-ever such purchase won by over seven lengths on her second start after costing just 7,500gns at the sale. We’ve been finding quality and value in the horses in training markets for our horse racing syndicates ever since.
Why horses in training sales matter
Selecting the right trainer for each horse is central to that approach. Our Director Of Racing, Simon Turner, a former Racing Post handicapper and winner of the Annual Naps Table and National Press Challenge, applies a disciplined, data led eye to prospective recruits so owners can rely on informed decisions rather than chance.
Headline examples underline the point: Group 1 winners Glen Shiel (£45,000) and Outbox (16,000gns) were both acquired from the sales and later rewarded patient, targeted training, proof that careful buying in the ring can translate into top-level performance.
For 2026 the focus remains the same with a pair of lightly raced horses secured whose quality existing form and physical profiles suggest genuine scope for progression during the year.
Elements Of Fire – Analysis and 2026 campaign outlook
Elements Of Fire, a four-year-old by the influential sire Too Darn Hot, has joined Archie Watson‘s Lambourn yard.
He landed his two-year-old debut at Chelmsford in November, in a heat that has worked out particularly well – the next eight horses home all went on to win, underlining the quality of the form.
This late-maturing half-brother to a three-time winner was next seen at Doncaster in April last year, where he suffered some interference or would have finished closer than the four lengths he was ultimately behind the winner, to whom he was conceding seven pounds.

That form was shown in a great light time again through the campaign with the first and second home ending the year rated 109 and 95 respectively.
Elements Of Fire came out the same horse as the winner at the weights, and there is a clear argument to say he could be well treated off his opening mark of 87.
Archie reports he’s training well in Lambourn. Elements Of Fire is expected to kick off his campaign for his owners in the first half of February at Lingfield, with Archie taking advantage of the fact he’s still eligible for another outing in novice company. Mehmas Champion – German Classic form and more to come
Mehmas Champion may not win any prizes for originality in his name, but his form in Germany last year suggests his owners have every reason for optimism if he can reproduce that level on British soil.
The four-year-old is a scopey individual who bypassed the juvenile campaign and arrived as a progressive type in 2025. He shaped with promise when sent off a warm favourite on debut in Germany, in a race that worked out notably well.

On his third and final start in Germany he ran a solid race in the German 2000 Guineas, finishing fourth, a performance that underlines his class and provides a strong platform to build on.
He arrives in Britain with an initial rating of 98 and has been placed with David O’Meara, a trainer who has an excellent record with imported recruits.
David reports he’s delighted with how Mehmas Champion has trained through December and January and expects him to be ready to contest a maiden early in the turf season before stepping up into higher level handicaps if all goes to plan.
If Mehmas Champion progresses as expected into Great British Racing, he’ll prove another example of how targeted purchases from in-training sales can feed into a considered training plan and offer owners meaningful upside across the season.
Targeted buying, tailored training, realistic upside for owners
Taken together, Elements Of Fire and Mehmas Champion exemplify the strategy of targeted buying at the sales followed by a tailored training plan, an approach that has delivered headline results for Hambleton Racing’s horse racing syndicates time and again.
We look forward to seeing how both horses can progress for their horse racing syndicates.
