Archie Watson’s latest Group win
5th September 2020
Mighty Gurkha was the latest two-year-old to advertise the immense skills of trainer Archie Watson earlier today, as he won the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton.
The son of Sepoy, a 14,000gns yearling, made all the running and stuck on in game style in the closing stages for a game stakes race success under Adam McNamara.
A seven and-a-half length winner on debut, Mighty Gurkha had run a fine race in defeat at Group 3 level on his previous start after losing his winning chance in the early stages.
He made no mistake this time, breaking well and racing in a nice rhythm before finding plenty under Adam McNamara.
One of the hallmarks of Archie’s success with his horses to date is the vast majority of his impressive winners have been bought relatively cheaply at auction.
Archie’s incredible knack of producing these high level performances from relatively cheaply bought bloodstock is a rare skill indeed. Knowing Archie can produce horses of real quality without breaking the bank is of course a huge bonus for our owners, many of whom have enjoyed notable successes with Archie with the likes of Maystar and Glen Shiel.
Archie and his team feel this autumn’s yearling sales where prices look certain to be significantly down – the first major sale of the year saw turnover down by nearly 40% - will offer them the best opportunity they have ever had to source quality two-year-old talent within their budget.
We’re very much looking forward to seeing the youngsters Archie can source for us, starting at next week’s Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sales, where Archie and his team will be working hard trying to find next year’s Mighty Gurkha.
