Churchella wins at York
27th July 2024
One of the greatest stories of progress within the current Hambleton team is that of Churchella, who’s win at York on Friday was the sixth of her burgeoning career for her horse racing syndicate and David O’Meara.
The daughter of Churchill is becoming one of the more popular members of our team with her will to win and a quirk or two providing a perfect balance of light and shade to keep her competitive with the handicapper, and her owners in the winner’s enclosure.
Racing at York looked a long way off when Churchella was rated in the low 50s but David always felt she was a filly who had the ability to come good and once she’d got her head in front, Churchella has never really looked back.
A well-bred filly, she’s really come good this year, progressing from a mark in the low 50’s to be a solid handicapper who can race at tracks like Doncaster, Newmarket and York.
The intriguing thing is David thinks there could be more to come from her yet, which is a nice thought for her owners, for whom she was winning for the sixth time in ten months on the Knavesmire.
Settled towards the rear of the field as is so often her way, Churchella travelled well under stable jockey Danny Tudhope, before picking up under pressure in the final quarter mile.
As the race reached the very closing stages, Danny switched Churchella to make her final run and the pair found an impressive burst of speed to run down her field in the shadows of the post.
It was wonderful to see Churchella take the famous walk back into the York winners enclosure, with his trainer shadowing him as the pair received a great round of applause from a typically big York crowd.
A busy filly who takes her racing well, it’s a fair bet that Churchella will be back out and racing soon, bidding to add win number seven to her impressive tally.
