Karl Burke’s Spigot Lodge yard in Middleham is a genuinely family-run operation, with wife Elaine and daughters Kelly and Lucy all part of the team. A fine judge at the sales, Karl has a proven record for sourcing quality cheaply and occasionally selling horses on for huge profits. Half Sovereign was a shining example, Karl buying her for just 12,000gns before she was resold for €2,600,000 just over a year later.
There are many other examples such as Dandalla (€22,000), the Royal Ascot winner who later sold on for 750,000 guineas. Karl’s excellent judgement regularly delivers success for Hambleton’s owners from his Middleham base in Yorkshire.
David O’Meara, based just east of York
David O’Meara, based just east of York at Willow Farm, has built a reputation for improving horses that arrive from other yards. Amazing Maria and Lord Glitters both went on to win at Group 1 level under his care, proof that a change of scenery and the right training can transform a horse’s career.
Beyond the county: widening the racing calendar
Hambleton also partners with Archie Watson in Lambourn and Tom Clover in Newmarket.
