Sheriff wins valuable chase prize

9th November 2020

It’s still early days for the Hambleton colours in the jumps sphere, but the success of Whoshotthesheriff in Monday’s most valuable race of the day at Carlisle, suggests our beige and blue colours can replicate the notable success we provide owners with on the Flat.

The man charged with bringing great results for our owners over jumps is Phil Kirby, who has made a terrific start for us with a horse of the quality of Whoshotthesheriff.

Sheriff’s horse racing syndicate were enjoying their fourth win overall and a first over fences with the strapping son of Dylan Thomas, who has always looked a chaser in the making and put in an accomplished round of jumping at Carlisle to score by a length at the line in a race worth over £23,000 to the winner.

Sheriff jumped well throughout under regular pilot Sean Quinlan, on what was only his second start over the larger obstacles. He looks a real natural over his fences and moved to the head of affairs two fences from home, never looking like being beaten despite the narrower margin at the line.

Phil, perhaps best known to date for super mare Lady Buttons, was delighted with the performance and is excited for the rest of the season now Sheriff has won his first race over fences.

With two solid efforts in the bag over fences now, Whoshotthesheriff certainly looks a chaser to keep on the right side of and connections are sure to have some exciting days ahead this season.

Hambleton’s ethos has always been to buy intelligently, use the best trainers and place our horses as shrewdly as possible.

This year we’ve enjoyed Listed, Group 3 and Group 1 success on the Flat and it's exciting to think that Whoshotthesheriff could well now be ready to take his chance in some top races over fences this season.

We’re actively looking to add further quality to our small but select jumps string with Phil and are confident we can continue to enjoy great results together.

The success of Whoshotthesheriff will hopefully pave the way for many more winners over obstacles in the beige and blue. We can't wait to see him out again!
