Outbox lands Group 2 win
3rd May 2024
We’re almost out of words to describe the legend Outbox. At the grand old age of nine, the superstar rolls back the years to win the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
He’s a character who’s held in some affection at Archie Watson’s Saxon Gate stables, with his early morning dance moves and general love of life endearing him to one and all.
However, he’s not just an entertainer but a very classy racehorse, as he reminded everyone as he ran right away for an authoritative success in the feature race on the first day of Newmarket’s Guineas Festival.
The win takes his earnings since joining us to a fraction under £700,000 - not bad for a horse who we sourced for just 16,000gns from sales!
In typically good order showing off his paces in the paddock beforehand, Outbox was something of a handful for Hollie on the way to post but once the pair jumped out of the stalls he was on his very best behaviour and soon in a lovely rhythm bowling along in front.
As the race started to develop up the famous Rowley Mile, Outbox showed no signs of stopping and emerging from the dip still had lengths in hand over his rivals.
Hollie then asked Outbox to pick up again and he stayed on strongly to record what was ultimately a comfortable success in this massive race to the delight of his horse racing syndicate.
Afterwards there were great scenes as Hollie, walking in on the hero of the hour, explained to ITV viewers how much she loves this special horse, before Oli Bell interviewed some of Outbox’s winning owners who had a little flutter on the 50-1 winner.
For his part, Outbox was unusually calm afterwards, perhaps savouring landing his first domestic Group 2 win.
The term legend is often used, but is undeniably apt for Outbox, who has raced around the world for his owners, making some memories they’ll never forget.
His master trainer Archie Watson deserves all the plaudits for producing Outbox in such outstanding shape to win this massive race at the Guineas Festival.
Always a man with a plan, it’s inevitable that Archie will now be using his encyclopaedic knowledge of world racing to try and find Outbox further opportunities to prosper in big races this year.
For his part, Outbox will be bringing the dance moves in the paddock and can hopefully make some more special memories for his owners along the way.
The lovely picture in the gallery of him jumping off to post conveys just how much this special boy means to everyone who’s lucky enough to be around him.
Wherever he goes next, it’s sure to be fun!
