Karl Burke

Racehorse Trainer

Karl is a vastly experienced and highly successful trainer who has worked his way up to the top after starting training with just a handful of horses in the late 1980s.

Strong year-on-year progression saw Karl move to the impressive Spigot Lodge in Middleham, ideally situated between the famous Middleham High and Low Moor gallops and steeped in racing history, and Karl has never looked back.

Karl is now regarded as one of the very best trainers in Britain, and with good reason.

In 2023 and 2024 only Godolphin’s Charlie Appleby trained more Stakes winners than Karl, with Karl saddling no less 23 Stakes winners in 2024. Remarkably, Karl went on to saddle 39 Stakes winners in 2025.

These incredible results highlight Karl’s ability to make an impression in the very best races, often with horses sourced at sensible prices.

It’s not just big Group race winners Karl has trained from Spigot Lodge, in 2024 he enjoyed Classic success with Irish 1000 Guineas winner Fallen Angel winning at the highest level.

Two-time Group 1 winner Odeliz is another example of the many money-spinning bargains Karl has master minded. She was bought for just €22,000 as a yearling before being sold for £1,000,000.

These amazing results with horses sourced on a sensible budget attracted Hambleton to Karl’s and we’ve never looked back, enjoying some lovely winners together.
