Snowfall provides a windfall!

6th February 2023

There was a great result in the sales ring for First Snowfall’s owners in recent days as their mare sold for 68,000 Guineas at the Tattersalls February sale in Newmarket, providing a tidy windfall for her owners.

The return represented a good result for her owners, after she joined our ranks just over 12 months earlier from the very same sales ring, for just 17,000gns.

At that stage, First Snowfall was an unraced Dubawi mare out of a mare who had shown Group 1 level form.

Our sales experts felt if she could stand her racing and get a win next to her name Snowfall would have every chance of increasing her value markedly, and so it proved.

It’s fair to say Snowfall wasn’t the easiest mare to win with but trainer Archie Watson did a typically great job with her, and the stars aligned last month at Newcastle, where Snowfall won by a wide margin to the delight of her owners.

Having proved herself durable enough to stand racing and also now a winner, we headed back to Tattersalls hopeful of a good result for everyone.

Thankfully, the mare showed herself off really well at the sales, and with her pedigree standing up to the closest inspection, there was plenty of interest in her, with a variety of bidders staking their claim to take her home.

In the end, it was the renowned judges from BBA Ireland who won the day, and Snowfall will now continue her career as a broodmare for her new connections.

Hopefully this well-bred mare can prove a shrewd acquisition and do well in her new career. Her success in sales ring was yet another feather in the cap of our buying team, who have secured our owners any number of great value winners from the in-training sales in recent years, building on our proud tradition of buying great value from these sales.

Group 1 winners Glen Shiel (£45,000) and Outbox (16,000gns), and two-time Group winner Tempus (25,000gns) are some of our more high-profile success stories while the likes of Going Places (20,000gns), Highland Dress (€24,000) and Miquelon (18,000gns) all raced successfully for their owners before being sold on for a decent profit for their horse racing syndicates.

We’re very proud of record with our in-training recruits and will continue to try and mine these sales for the very best value we can find our owners.

As ever, those registered to keep in touch with our in-training recruits and our existing owners who have let us know they'd like to get involved, will be the first to know about any opportunities!
